dave's picks |
Is anyone else really unhappy with the way the Dave's Picks series is being handled?
I would love to own most of the releases in this series, but I can't bring myself to pay $100+ up front before I even know what the shows are going to be. It seems unfair.
I was wondering if anybody else feels the same, or if people see this from a different point of view.

I don't even bother with Dave's picks, they have their head so far up their asses, it's ridiculous, however, I would be willing to give them free consulting if they contact me...

Re: dave's picks |
well said and I think they do get free consulting from all of us here Maybe they will release my 1995 Albany Dew recommendation:). I felt better about the road trips releases with the incentive to buy early and get the bonus disc instead of one bonus for the whole blind subscription(although we got alot of hints this time around). I don't know the cost of producing cds but why limit anything when there is money to still be made. Also why limit yourself to online sales instead of retail outlets like Best Buy,FYE etc.. Plus the limited edition bs just promotes the ebay profiteering thing. And whats up with the Daves Pick store I can't see alot of people forking over $46 for the polo or $8 a patch. Total waste of resources if you ask me, $10 T shirt maybe, $58 pullover doubt it. I do like the new packaging though its nice that it actually protects your investment unlike those eco friendly garbage ones.(with a $3 price increase). I have boycotted so far but if the Branford show comes out I will buy it. I did ask for the Daves Pick Subscription for Christmas but Santa didn't get me it She probably figured the 80 or so Dead/JG releases I have are enough and got me boots instead.

Re: dave's picks |
Best Buy etc wouldn't produce enough sales to be worth the shipping. But good point on that store. The sweaters and so on aren't limited edition. So they'll have more $46 Dave's Pick Polo Shirts made when those run out, but won't press more CDs? Is there some kind of CD worker shortage in Bangladesh factories?
Well, at least the $112 rhinestone "dazzle like a true Deadhead" shirt is limited edition.

Re: dave's picks |
They'd do better if they released better hits packages.
They have SO many good songs from studio and live ablums, but the CDs in the stores are turnoffs not turn-ons. There a lot of talk about the GD business model, but it doesn't serve them now.

Re: dave's picks |
My point on utilizing retail outlets is there is a greater market than just dead.net. Rhino is owned by Warner Music its not a small company like the old Grateful Dead Records. Rhino's product line is sent to retail stores all over and I imagine shipping would be minimal because it would be bulk, they would take a hit on selling wholesale vs retail though. They could offer a bonus disc on dead.net for people who order online early to keep these people happy.
Best Buy has over 1000 stores and that is just one chain. How many people even know about Daves Picks? Or even bother to shop at Dead.net. If you went to a Furthur show and asked people what Daves Picks is most of them would have no clue. I think this would give the slackers that are not that motivated to preorder anything a chance to get these not to mention Christmas, Birthday presents etc.. Plus all these chains you can order stuff online which would increase internet sales.
It seems like they are making these limited to cash in quickly I just doubt they use this marketing strategy with other artists. They know there is this core group of Deadheads that will keep buying and if you do a small run it will sell out. I am curious if Dave's Picks can be digitally released or if its just limited to cds? If they lose out on digital sales in the long run that is just stupidity. I still like to purchase cds and have something tangible to hold on to but I am probably a minority in that department. Oh And I just ordered my wife the Sweater she will Loovvveeee it for Valentines....

Re: dave's picks |
I hate the whole limited-edition/bonus-disc/subscription deal. What a way to limit access to Dead releases. (Looks like DP5 has now sold out, by the way.)
Not much we can do about it except write letters of protest, though.

Re: dave's picks |
They clearly are not pressing enough copies . Not everyone has the cash up front at the right time . Someone might have a good month, and think, "Hey now I can get some of those ..." but they can't . So they get a torrent, or a burn, and the GD people don't make a cent . I don't know their numbers, I can see the bonus disc thing as an incentive to make their minimum units sold, but I think they are needlessly antagonizing people who would like to give them money .

Re: dave's picks |
No I'm against the blind limited edition subscription deal. I am okay with with either the blind purchase or the limited edition but hate the combo. However I ended purchasing all 4 last year anyways and when it became obvious that I would purchase the first two this year I reluctantly slapped down my money. I really hope Dave continues to pick shows that I like. If not could someone lend me some pliers so I can get this fish hook out of my mouth? Where is Cliff?

Re: dave's picks |
No way do I pony up for the blind subscription deal. It's just too much to ask that we spend that much and then hope we agree w/his pix. I do my best to buy immediately the individual releases I like , i.e. 5/25/77 and 11/17/73.
On a semi-related topic, anyone have any idea why we can't stream the SBD version of Philly 11/5/79 on the archive when it is NOT a Road Trips release as the message says? (It ID's it as Vol. 1 No. 1 but that is a different show entirely from '79.)
anyone know of any way I can access a clean SBD version of 11/5/79?

Re: dave's picks |
I don't know of any places to stream 11-5 but I do know that it has been officially released. After they did RT 1.1 they did a couple of full show releases that were download only. Unfortunately, 11-5-79 was one of them. I think it was experimental because they never did any more like that. I don't think that they're on dead.net anymore either.

Re: dave's picks - calling Jeff Kaplan |
You're correct. You should let the folks here know that they have a case of premature sbd banning. 11-6 is on that release. No 11-5 tracks.

Re: dave's picks |
I haven't bought an official release since Dicks Picks #1. if I want a show I don't already have - I know where to get it. Not that I don't have the money, just rather spend it on milk and bread.
I don't need the cleanest sonic copy ever created - I. Guess after listening to cassettes for years most of the shows I get sound fantastic to me already. I guess my theory is, unless I'm playing it on a great system, I'm not going to hear much of a difference.
I don't hold anything against the band for releasing as much as they want and trying to make something off their archives and pulling boards they release.
Thank God for the archive and its holdings - a true miracle in its time. Back in the day we wOuld have never imagined in a million years the vast array. Of music here.

like most i just dont have the extra cash to plunk down on these releases. i support the bands by buying concerts tickets. i hardly ever buy cd's any more unless it is from a local band. everything else major i can just dl from some bittorrent site
